Move
[edit]Why the move? Is there another Ernie we need to disambiguate from? --mav
- Also did this with Bert. I don't know, it's just that if there ever was... user:zanimum
- When and if that happens we will take care of it then. --mav
- Sigh. Whatever.
Moved back. --mav
no homage
[edit]I removed the It's a Wonderful Life reference, as Henson said specifically that the names are NOT from the two supporting characters in that movie. It says this in Bert and Ernie - DavidWBrooks 11:56, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Than again, perhaps Henson's lawyers advised this course of action and it's just a coincidence that Bert is the officious muppet where Bert is the police officer, Ernie is the goofie muppet where Ernie the taxi driver is the goofier one of the pair (who kisses Bert after they croon to the newlyweds), etc. Denied or not, the coincidences are too striking and my statement was couched in "may" language; you probably should have left it in both articles, adding the official denial if you wished.

Seems inappropriate to me to remove this altogether. It would seem more appropriate to replace it with a proper reference to Henson's statement. Paul Brannan (talk) 14:34, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
rumors
[edit]I (hopefully) improved the language in the section titled "Rumors of Homosexuality" (previously titled "Bert and Ernie are Gay").
Homosexual rumor
[edit]A few weeks ago, a contributor removed the "Rumors of Homosexuality" entry to this article. His rationale, according to the history, was that "Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a rumor mill." In response, I say this is a urban legend, not a rumor; and the fact is, this urban legend exists; it is not rumormongering merely by restating it. The link I had provided was to snopes.com, a reputable Web site that reports the factual veracity of urban legends such as the one concerning the relationship between Bert and Ernie. The author of the article used nine sources - including the New York Times and USA Weekend to create the article (scroll to the very bottom of the article); to be sure, she sure didn't make it up out of thin air or base it on her personal opinion. I say the "Rumors of Homosexuality," along with the link to the snopes.com article, ought to go back in. [[Briguy52748 16:25, 15 July 2006 (UTC)]]
- I agree that snopes.com is a reliable enough source for urban legends and such; furthermore, the fact that Sesame Workshop had to issue a press release denying the urban legend shows that it's noteworthy. Not to mention the Avenue Q connection! I'll restore the section. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 05:14, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- Your thoughts were exactly what I was planning to add, Josiah, had no one restored it yet. Anyhow, I have renamed the subsection "Sexual orientation" to dispel any unintended notions. [[Briguy52748 19:21, 16 July 2006 (UTC)]]
I always thought they were brothers... let's make it official! :)
In a german song(„Hallo, Wie Wär's Mit Einem O?“) from sesame street theres a phrase where somebody talking ti ernie„Oder schenk' es deiner Frau.“("Or give it to your wife.") he answer„Wem? Bert?“("Who?Bert?")
Regarding the comment regarding Cookie Monster's cookie addiction, they did end up putting him on a diet, didn't they? Just some food for thought. Personally I always thought Bert and Ernie were based on The Odd Couple. horsedreamer 01:53, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
It's more like Cookie Monster was encouraged to moderate his diet on screen so the audience at home would be encouraged to do the same. Tyrekecorrea (talk) 21:46, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
I always thought they were brothers too! but I also agree that they are based off the odd couple Julie 08:31, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
This is the worst page I've ever found in Wikipedia.
[edit]There is nothing in here but speculation on unfounded and irrelevant rumors. I actually looked up Ernie to try and remember an album I had as a kid. Like the creators of the show said, they are asexual. The idea that people can't get past that is yet another example of how American society is operating at about a 7th grade intelect. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.196.109.55 (talk • contribs) 19:47, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- I realize this post is more than 18 months old, but a note to all contributors: If you believe this (or any other page) is "the worst" on Wikipedia, or is otherwise in need of cleanup, please be bold and improve it to how you see fit. The homosexual rumor statement was sourced and has the sourced counter-argument; I do not know how more clearly that it can be stated. Nowhere in this article does it state that "Ernie and Bert are gay" as fact. Nowhere. [[Briguy52748 (talk) 16:32, 17 July 2009 (UTC)]]
Merge
[edit]There is an article for Bert, an article for Ernie, and an article for Bert and Ernie. At least one of those three needs to go. I'd merge the first two into the third. Vidor (talk)
Whitmire as Ernie
[edit]According to Steve he only played Ernie in 1993 as Sesame Street toys and didn't start preforming him in live action till 1994
Primary topic
[edit]Is this character the primary topic? There could be a US systemic bias here. There are some other omportant meanings, including the Premium Bond machine, and Ernie Wise, famous British comic. PatGallacher (talk) 09:56, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

- Support and move as above. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:25, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose, 45 years of existance denotes the WP:PTOPIC is this and no other major competence for it. © Tbhotch™ (en-2.5). 04:44, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
- Support - and move Ernie (disambiguation) to Ernie. If there is primary topic for Ernie, it is as the diminutive form of the given name Ernest. However, there are plenty of other highly notable uses, such as the Benny Hill song, so I don't think that even it is primary. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:35, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
- Support Love the Sesame Street character though I do, there is no primary topic for Ernie. As others have said, also move Ernie (disambiguation) to Ernie. Xoloz (talk) 02:58, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
- Support. Even if arguably "PrimaryTopic", the title is not sufficiently recognizable. Ernie (Sesame Street), Bert (Sesame Street) & Bert and Ernie are content forks of the basically the same, fairly shallow, children's fictional topic and should all be merged into one article. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 03:45, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Ernie's Nationality
[edit]Where does it say that Ernie's Filipino? I can't find anything anywhere that serves as verification that it's more than rumor, and it bugs me. Tyrekecorrea (talk) 21:49, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
